Labour Party CLPs and branches are currently passing motions for the 2023 Annual Conference. On the left, it is really important we engage with this process, and build power with trade unions around our popular socialist policy platform.

When campaigning to be leader of the Labour Party, Keir Starmer stood on a platform of pledges, including ‘common ownership of energy’ and to ‘Put the Green New Deal at the heart of everything we do’. Our Public Power Now campaign expands on these pledges, arguing for full public ownership and democratic control of the UK energy system.

However, we cannot rely on any commitments we win - including common ownership of energy, and a publicly owned energy generation company - as handouts. We need to build political power in and around them. Otherwise, in the absence of organised political power, we will see these commitments watered down or abandoned entirely as the super rich use their power to campaign against them. 

Only the broadest possible working class coalition can exert enough pressure to ensure that a Labour government delivers public ownership of energy as the foundation of a socialist Green New Deal. That’s why we need your support.

During our campaign, we want to popularise these ideas, and raise awareness of our campaign among MPs. We are asking people to tell their MP to back Public Power Now using our letter campaign.

Additionally, we are asking Labour members to debate and pass our motion at their local constituency labour party (CLP) meetings, to put pressure on the Labour Party to adopt it as official policy.
